Sr. Talent Buyer

Reports to:  Chief Programming Officer

Direct Reports:  Talent Buyer; Performing Arts Coordinator

Job Summary:   

The Sr. Talent Buyer is responsible for all programming, booking and promotion of the Musikfest Café at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks venue as well as additional ArtsQuest booking opportunities throughout the year.  The Sr. Talent Buyer is a full-time position working in close collaboration with the Programming, Production, Operations, Hospitality and Food Service teams to manage ArtsQuest’s presentation programming. The Sr. Talent Buyer is responsible for concert booking, show preparation, as well as support for promotions, and supervision of show staff and volunteers.   


Job Responsibilities:  

•Oversee concert presentation program: Meets annual program goals for revenue, show count, attendance, pricing, genre diversity, and emerging artist representation. 

•Lead buyer for the Musikfest Café, a concert venue of 470 seats to 1,000 capacity. Program, book and promote more than one hundred concerts and events in the Musikfest Café on an annual basis to meet annual budget goals for the venue.

•Maintain strong relationships with agents, promoters, musicians and music industry professionals as well as representatives from local schools, performing arts organizations and others that will help support our mission.

•Program, book and promote more than three hundred shows and events per year across venues including the Musikfest Café, the Fowler Blast Furnace Room, Levitt Pavilion including the Yuengling Summer Series, as well as ArtsQuest’s festivals and event.

•Program, book and promote multiple festival events annually including the Blast Furnace Blues Festival, RiverJazz, SouthSide Arts & Music Festival, Musikfest,

•Venue-wide calendar management for all ticketed shows as well as public and private events in coordination with the Programming and Hospitality staffs. 

•Negotiate all contractual agreements between ArtsQuest and agent/promoter/artists/artist management; submit and process show offers and execute agency-issued contracts and any in-house room rental contracts in coordination with Hospitality staff.

•Manage artist payouts, outgoing agency deposits, and incoming rental deposits and maintain venue-wide music, marketing and production budgets with Finance, Marketing and Box Office.

•Manage related partnerships: Work with partner organizations to develop mutually beneficial programming, involving partners whenever possible; develop contracts, invoices and track participation; provide occasional booking consulting to partner organizations. 

•Maintain strong relationships with agents, promoters, musicians and music industry professionals as well as representatives from local schools, performing arts organizations and others that will help support our mission.

•Support local and emerging artists and a balanced diversity of genre representation; work with Programming Department to book diverse and emerging artists onto venue bills with popular nationally recognized acts; consistently listen to demo submissions and respond to bands appropriately within reasonable time frames. 

•Manage Talent Buyer and Performing Arts Coordinator and work directly with the production team to execute shows in the Musikfest Café, the Fowler Blast Furnace Room, Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks and more. 

•Staff Liaison to Volunteer-led programming committee(s).  

•Manage and contract show staff and interns; hire, train, manage and conduct periodic evaluations of contract show staff and booking intern(s). 

•Maintain database of performer, promoter, and agency contacts in Raiser’s Edge database; keep current contact information for contacts we work with, document interactions with contacts such that show staff can readily follow any agreements made. 

•Attend weekly BEO meetings to coordinate the logistics of newly announced and upcoming shows. 

•Work with Event Services to ensure all venue program scheduling in accordance with security policy outlines, and that staff have all info they need. 

•Cultivate and nurture community and industry partnership opportunities with outside promoters and other non-profit organizations.  

•Track and evaluate concert venue and festival programs; track program participation in database and run regular reports in collaboration with Development Department. 

•Support planning and production of ArtsQuest annual fundraising events. 

•The position will focus on Musikfest Cafe concert and festival music programming and public events.


Other responsibilities:

•Provide support for Chief Programming Officer as necessary.

•Support Development staff as needed for fundraising events. 

•Attend Programming Committee meetings to communicate progress toward goals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

•At least 3 to 5 years music industry talent-buying experience and major agency contacts.

•Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry or related field of study.

•Knowledge of local and national music and performing arts. 

•Experience planning and coordinating events for a community-based arts organization.

•Ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with a broad range of individuals including professional musicians, partner organizations and volunteers. 

•Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, Outlook.   

•Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

•Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends and holidays when needed.

Employee is frequently required to travel between our facilities, all within 1 mile of one another using reliable transportation.  Employee is occasionally required to travel offsite for business meetings as needed.

A salary range has been established and will be discussed with qualified candidates. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
