Senior Water Resources Engineer
Biohabitats is seeking an ecologically-focused Senior Water Resources Engineer to join our Hudson River Bioregion team in Brooklyn, NY.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, analytical, and engineering skills that can be applied to a variety of projects including planning studies, in-field ecological assessments, restoration design development and analysis, and preparation of design plans and construction documents. The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, landscape architects, and engineers to support watershed and ecological planning, habitat restoration, conservation, climate adaptation and resiliency, and environmental justice work for government, private, and non-governmental organizations.

Role and Responsibilities

Serving as Project Manager or Technical Lead on projects.

Leading and supporting a range of planning, design, and design-build projects related to ecological assessment and planning; green stormwater infrastructure; nature-based coastal resilience; stream, wetland, and floodplain restoration; dam removal and fish passage; and environmental justice.

Developing hydrodynamic and sediment transport models for coastal and riverine systems.

Creating site-specific concept designs.

Preparing design drawings, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.

Providing construction phase services (e.g., bid support, construction observation).

Conducting natural resources and watershed inventories and field assessments.

Supporting Hudson River Bioregion business development activities, including proposal writing.
Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

Professional experience related to ecological restoration projects.

Applied experience leading aspects of design projects from concept through construction drawings and implementation (e.g. grading, drainage, erosion protection, habitat enhancement features, planting, and non-native invasive species management).

Proficient in the use of hydrologic and hydraulic and coastal modeling programs (e.g., TR-55/TR-20, HEC-RAS, SWMM, HydroCAD, Delft3D, MIKE21).

Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

2+ years of project management experience.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to lead or support field assessments under a variety of weather and site conditions.

Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.

Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the Hudson River and Northeast region.
Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

Familiarity with ecosystems of Hudson River, Long Island Sound, Coastal New Jersey watersheds

Familiarity with permitting of restoration projects in NJ, NY, CT, RI, and MA.

Experience developing proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.

Familiarity or experience with design-build project delivery method.

Experience with construction oversight; familiarity with restoration construction a plus.

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).

Experience in business development and professional networking in NJ, NY, and/or New England

Familiarity with structural BMP maintenance, dredging, and riser design requirements.

Knowledge and experience with geomorphic assessment.

Experience developing proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.

Proficiency in ArcGIS.
Education
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant engineering field (e.g., Civil, Environmental, Biological Systems or Ecological Engineering)
Years of Relevant Experience
10 - 15 years of relevant experience as a Water Resources Engineer and at least 2 years of project management and/or technical lead experience
Professional Registration
PE or ability to obtain through reciprocity within six months of hire date
Salary Range
$115,000.00 - $130,000.00
Location
Brooklyn, NY. Biohabitats provides a flexible, hybrid work environment. During the onboarding period, new team members are expected to spend several days each week in our Brooklyn office. They can then transition to at least two office days per week, with flexibility to adjust based on field work and travel.
