Thomas E. Hannah Aquatics Director


Under the supervision of the Branch Executive Director, the Spartanburg YMCA Aquatics Director is responsible for leading and developing aquatics programs and staff. This leader must run the aquatics department with safety in the forefront while ensuring that participant development occurs in a consistent, fun, and healthy manner. The Aquatics Director is responsible for managing the functions of the programs in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff and Board of Directors.


        Bachelor's degree in related field and/or 2-3 years of related experience preferred.

        Proficient computer skills with ability to use Microsoft software such as Excel, Word, and Publisher.

        Exceptional oral, public speaking and written communication skills.

        Ability to effectively manage staff and programs.

        Positive attitude, high level of initiative and professionalism, and enjoy working in and creating a strong team environment.

        Completion of the following within 90 days of hire: First Aid/CPR/AED, lifeguarding instructor certification and swim instructor certification.

        Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social, cultural, and economic segments of the community.

        Capacity to work a flexible schedule and respond to emergent situations.


Essential Functions

        Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and to fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community. Manage all aspects of the Thomas E. Hannah and Willis Road YMCA locations, develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations such as the Dr. TK Gregg Community Center.

        Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.

        Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.

        Secures and schedules pool facilities. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.

        Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR training.

        Creates and schedules swim classes.

        Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.

        Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.

        Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.

        Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.

        Assists with Program Committee meetings

        Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.

        Performs other duties as assigned.

        Lead staff person for Safety Around Water (SAW).
