POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Property Accountant is responsible for overseeing the accounting, financial reporting, and cash management activities for an assigned portfolio of commercial real estate assets. This role is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of monthly financial reporting, account reconciliations, budgeting support, variance analysis, and operational accounting functions across the portfolio.

The Senior Property Accountant serves as a key partner to Property Management, Asset Management, Lease Administration, and other internal stakeholders, providing financial insight, ensuring strong internal controls, and supporting informed business decision-making. The ideal candidate possesses strong commercial real estate accounting experience, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while driving process improvements and operational efficiencies.

This position is responsible for the full range of accounting processes and financial reporting for a portfolio of commercial, development, and residential real estate assets. This role will partner directly with property managers, asset managers, and third-party management companies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting & Month-End Close

Prepare and review monthly journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations for assigned properties

Maintain responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of property general ledgers and financial records

Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes for an assigned portfolio

Prepare and review monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, variance analyses, and management reporting packages

Research, analyze, and resolve accounting discrepancies, unusual account activity, and complex accounting issues

Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and company accounting policies and procedures

Review and analyze operating results and communicate key financial trends and risks to management

Cash Management & Property Accounting Operations

Monitor property cash balances and support cash management and forecasting activities

Review monthly bank reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of reconciling items

Review accounts payable activity to ensure appropriate coding, approvals, and expense recognition

Maintain oversight of accounting records related to fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, escrows, reserves, and security deposits

Monitor accounts receivable balances, collection activity, and aging trends in coordination with Property Management teams

Evaluate and recommend improvements to accounting workflows and internal controls

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis

Analyze budget-to-actual results and prepare detailed variance explanations for management and ownership reporting

Partner with Property Managers and Asset Managers to provide financial analysis and operational support

Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial analyses to support asset performance and strategic decision-making

Assist management in identifying operational risks and opportunities through financial reporting and analysis

Acquisition, Disposition & Reporting Support

Lead financial onboarding activities for newly acquired properties, including account setup, balance sheet review, and integration into existing reporting processes

Support accounting activities related to property acquisitions, dispositions, refinancing transactions, and ownership transfers

Prepare and review lender, ownership, investor, and other recurring financial reporting packages

Coordinate audit requests and prepare year-end support schedules and workpapers

Assist with property-level audits, tax reporting support, and other compliance-related requirements

Collaboration, Leadership & Process Improvement

Serve as a primary accounting contact for Property Managers, Asset Managers, Lease Administration, and other stakeholders regarding property financial activity

Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to Property Accountants, offshore resources, and third-party accounting teams, as applicable

Review work prepared by junior accounting staff and provide constructive feedback to ensure accuracy and consistency

Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, reporting quality, and operational efficiency

Participate in system implementations, enhancements, process improvement initiatives, and other special projects

Support the development and maintenance of standardized accounting policies and procedures across the portfolio

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

5-8 years of accounting experience, with commercial real estate or property accounting experience strongly preferred

Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles

Experience with MRI or similar real estate accounting software preferred

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required

Demonstrated ability to independently manage a property portfolio and meet multiple reporting deadlines

Experience reviewing the work of others and providing training or mentorship preferred

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization

WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS

This position is based in MCB’s Baltimore headquarters and requires in-office attendance Monday through Thursday. Employees may work remotely on Fridays, subject to business needs and company policy.

The role requires the ability to independently manage a portfolio of commercial real estate assets, meet multiple deadlines, maintain a high degree of accuracy, and support a growing and dynamic real estate platform.
