Deputy Fire Chief - Town of Charlton Fire
The Charlton Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill a pending vacancy for the position of Full-Time Deputy Fire Chief. Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief performs highly responsible supervisory and administrative functions involving the planning, organizing, budgeting, staffing, management, and direction of all aspects of Fire Department operations, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
The Deputy Fire Chief serves as the Department’s second-in-command and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Fire Chief in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or enrolled) in Fire Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in an organized fire department, with at least the most recent seven (7) years consisting of full-time experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Successful completion of the Massachusetts Fire Academy Career Recruit Training Program or an equivalent program.
- Pro Board Firefighter I/II certifications.
- Fire Officer I/ II certifications required: Fire Officer III preferred.
- Valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Current Massachusetts EMT certification, Paramedic preferred.
- Pro Board Hazardous Materials Operations–level certification.
- Successful completion of NIMS 700 and 800, and ICS 100, 200, 300 is required; ICS 400 is preferred.
- Ability to reside within twenty (20) miles of the Charlton town line within twelve (12) months of appointment, with demonstrated progress toward establishing residency. A six (6) month extension may be granted at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
- Chief Fire Officer certification is required within twenty-four (24) months of appointment.
- Fire Prevention Officer (FPO) Basic certification.

Salary Range: $103,700 – $125,950, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
