Water System Operator


PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of the production wells, booster stations, water storage tanks, distribution system, treatment plant and telemetry system for the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club Public Water Supply system.  Work varies, requires significant individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures. 


Operates and maintains groundwater production wells and distribution system; water storage tanks, and related equipment; takes samples and tests; performs various tasks in the maintenance of the distribution system; inspects and operates motors, pumps, telemetry and related equipment; calculates dosage and adds chemicals to treatment system in accordance with standards set by the State where applicable; performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Ensures regulatory compliance, thoroughly understands and abides by all local, state, and federal agency rules and requirements; performs sampling, testing, and submits necessary documentation to agencies in compliance with the Montana Department of Environmental Qualities Drinking Water Regulations for Community Public Water Supplies.  

May order and inventory supplies, replacement parts, distribution system parts, professional leak detection and tank inspection services, and any other needed materials, supplies, or professional services with the Vice President of Development’s approval; calibrate equipment; maintain distribution system with flushing, parts replacement, and disinfection; read, repair, and test meters; repair fire hydrants and valves, tap water mains, and conduct service line and main line inspections as directed; identify leaks in the distribution system and responsible for leak repairs; may oversee repairs made by contractors to the water system; locate water service lines, and provide service to customers including service turn-ons and turn-offs; may be on 24 hour call for emergencies; and operates and maintains Companies vehicles and equipment to a high standard of appearance.

Maintains a daily record of operations, record daily well flow records for individual well production; keep a maintenance log that documents down times, reasons for malfunctions, and system maintenance performed; reads and calculates water well meter readings, gauges, computer readouts, graphs; monitors equipment, alarm circuits, and records information; maintain routine operational records, prepares test results, tabulations, and summary reports; uses equipment with care to assure against breakdown or deterioration.

Position requires employee to perform a multitude of movements of which a moderate physical effort including lifting up to 100 pounds (greater with assistance); contact with chemicals and undesirable physical conditions; hazards are moderate requiring care and use of proper safety equipment and procedures to prevent injury; contact with the public, customers, contractors, and suppliers is limited and positive relationships must be maintained.


The following constitute the minimum requirements of the Operator position.

1. Education and Experience

a.   High school graduate or equivalent

b. At least 2 years’ experience with water systems (supply and distribution)

2. Certification and Continuing Education

a.   Certification or ability to become certified at the following levels or greater*:

    i.       Water Supply: 4B

    ii.   Water Distribution: 4A

b. Willingness to obtain continuing education as required by the State of Montana to stay certified at current levels

c.   Willingness to obtain continuing education as required by the State of Montana to gain additional levels of certification

3. Physical Capabilities

a.   Ability and willingness to work in a variety of weather and job conditions

b.  Ability to lift 100 pounds and assist others in lifting heavier amounts

c.   Ability to perform work that may require bending, stooping, crawling, and climbing

d.  Willingness to be on call and/or available for emergencies 24 hours a day

Ø  Maintains and operate production wells, distribution system, and related property equipment efficiently;

Ø  Reviews new water main extension plans, and periodically inspects them as they are constructed;

Ø Tests water as required by the State of Montana and is responsible for annual "Consumer Confidence Reports" to customers;

Ø  Maintains water testing and production records in accordance with state requirements;

Ø  Testing and production records are maintained according to required procedures;

Ø  Maintains and applies knowledge of the function and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery involved in the operation of the water system to keep all equipment in good working order;

Ø  Submits an annual budget for water system operations and maintenance to the VP of Development;

Ø  Make recommendations to the VP of Development on system needs in order to assure satisfactory day-to-day operation;

 Ø  Responds to one call locate requests for water distribution system piping locates;

Ø  May oversee construction and/or maintenance of water distribution system by contractors;

Ø  Maintains appropriate license and operator certificates so as to perform all duties in accordance with the State of Montana requirements for water system operators;

Ø  Performs all assigned, implied, scheduled, and unscheduled other duties as may be assigned effectively and efficiently.

Ø Consistently reports to work on time and prepare to perform duties of position;

Ø Attendance/ Punctuality and Dependability:  Depended upon to report to work at the scheduled time, is seldom absent from work, and keeps unplanned absences to a minimum.  Employee follows company policy of reporting/planning absences and going through the correct channels to request time off.  Completes work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, is conscientious about assignments and deadlines;

Ø Normal Work Schedule – 5  weekdays:  Flexible to accommodate weekend on call duties or another variation of 40 hours/week;

Ø Office Hours – 8:00 to 5 weekdays:  on-call 24/7 to operate and maintain utility systems as needed;
