Position Description

Chief Executive of the Northern Virginia Hospital Alliance (NVHA) and the Northern Virginia Emergency Response System (NVERS).  This position reports to the NVHA and NVERS Board of Directors.  NVHA is a non-profit coalition established in 2002 to develop a coordinated program for business continuity, emergency preparedness, response and recovery for the 14 member hospitals and health systems.  NVERS is an emergency response coalition that supports regional collaboration and capacity building in all facets of emergency preparedness within Northern Virginia. It was established in 2005 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2015. Annual evaluation of performance will be based on achievement of NVHA and NVERS strategic goals.  Both NVHA and NVERS Board members will provide feedback and assessment related to the achievement of goals.  The Executive Director is responsible for leading a complex, sensitive and mission critical program with more than $5M a year in annual revenue and a team of more than 9 team members.  Developing and fostering strategic partnerships is a critical element of the Executive Director’s responsibilities.   

Leadership & Management:

  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation and consistent quality of finance and administration, business development, communications and systems.

  • Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve NVHA and NVERS strategic goals.

  • Actively engage and energize NVHA and NVERS participants, board members, committees, partner organizations, grant administrators and others.

  • Develop, maintain and support a strong Board of Directors and Sub / Advisory Committees.

  • Lead, manage, coach, develop and retain NVHA and NVERS staff and ensure effective systems are in place to track progress and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders and other constituents.

  • Serve as an Ex-Officio member of the Board of Directors for NVHA and NVERS, working in partnership with Board leadership to develop shared objectives, facilitate meetings and support the governance of the organization.

    Business Development, Fundraising & Communications:

  • Support the expansion of revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion.

  • Ensure the refinement of all aspects of communications, from web presence to social media to external relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new business opportunities.

  • Proactively and professionally communicate and engage with all key stakeholders in the programming and outcomes of NVHA and NVERS.

  • Transparently share information, including key outcomes and measurements, with members, Board, staff and community partners.

    Strategy, Planning & New Business:

  • Design, implement and maintain a strategic business planning process for the NVHA and NVERS.

  • Represent and promote NVHA and NVERS interests as a participant at the National Healthcare Coalition Resource Center.

  • Ensure NVHA and NVERS has a local, regional and national presence by publishing and communicating program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication.

  • Understand NVHA’s and NVERS unique position in the NCR and nationally, and guide the Board and staff in making solid business decisions based on analysis, connection and commitment to serving our community.

    Operations & Finances:

  • Develop budgets and design regular reporting tools that help the both the NVHA and NVERS Board and staff manage the NVHA and NVERS business.

  • Ensure the organization operates efficiently within its budget.

  • Ensure a strong administrative infrastructure (HR, IT/Technology, Finance, and Legal/Compliance) that supports current operations and positions the organization for long-term growth and stability.

  • Lead efforts in recruiting, hiring, supervising and motivating well-trained and engaged staff, ensuring that staff have clear performance measurements and are rewarded fairly for their work.

  • On-Call responsibilities for Incident Command and RHCC support during activation and pre-planned events.

    Our Ideal Candidate

  • 7 or more years of relevant leadership experience, which should include managing a complex organizational structure and a budget of $2-5 million.

  • Master’s degree in an applicable field, and preferably advanced education, training or experience in the areas of business, healthcare, policy or nonprofit management.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with an independent Board of Directors, manage board relationships in a diplomatic and professional manner, and escalate high-priority issues as needed.

  • Successful membership development and fundraising experience, preferably including grants and other funding opportunities.

  • Ability to effectively review, analyze and present business and financial information to help the organization make the best possible decisions.

  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences — members, staff, Board and community partners – and develop strong and trusted relationships with each of these audiences.

  • Ability to communicate with honesty and transparency to all stakeholders, NVHA and NVERS staff, NVHA and NVERS Board and community partners.

  • Ability to work with multi-discipline, cross-discipline and multiple stakeholders/partners. 

  • Strong aptitude for delegation and prioritization, with a clear understanding of risk and impact.
