Early Childhood Programming and Outreach Manager:

Maryland Science Center seeks an enthusiastic and highly motivated early childhood professional to be our Early Childhood Programming and Outreach Manager. Our early childhood outreach program is a well-established STEM program visiting Head Start classrooms throughout Baltimore City. Most desirable candidates will have an undergraduate degree in early childhood, education, or a related field, as well as experience in a managerial position, 2-5 years’ experience in a museum or informal education setting, and a basic understanding of science concepts for early childhood audiences. The Early Childhood Programming and Outreach Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the excellent operation of a well-loved, endowed program, as well as creating high quality activities and programing for our early childhood guests and their adults. Basic Functions: 

§  Interact with children and other guests in a manner that is appropriate for their stage of development and model good early childhood practices for others.

  • Develop and implement long term sustainability of program
  • Organize family experiences at MSC
  • Plan and implement early childhood programming 
  • Supervise and empower part time staff and volunteers
  • Participate in the programmatic evaluation process
  • Manage the Ready Set Go budget
  • Act as Manager on Duty for Kids Room and facilitate visitor experience at the Maryland Science Center

 

§  Serve as ambassador for early childhood museum-wide

 

  • Attend training as directed by supervisor
  • Provide support to education department efforts
  • Other Duties as assigned

§  Knowledge of:

Stages of Early Childhood Development

Abilities and expected behaviors of young children

Appropriate language and actions for interactions with young children and adults

Basic science

Appropriate curriculum for young children and adult learners

 

§  Skills:

Excellent interpersonal and written communication

Excellent organizational skills

Curriculum development for early childhood and adult audiences

Stamina

Patience

 

§  Ability to:

Speak in front of and children and adults individually and in groups

Provide excellent guest service and ensure the same from staff

Remain imperturbable and composed in all situations

Take initiative

Utilize creativity

Evaluate staff and volunteers

Evaluate programming against content standards

Manage on-site and especially outreach staff

Create and maintain schedules to meet program partner and staff needs

Act as an ambassador for early childhood STEAM education in the community

 

Positions Supervised: part time staff and volunteers

 

Supervision Received: Director of Education with support of the Kids Room Manager as appropriate

 

Education: BA/BS in Early Childhood Education, Education, Science, or a related field from accredited university Strongly preferred.

Experience may be substituted for some education.

 

Experience: Designing curriculum; experience working with underserved audiences. Experience working in an early childhood environment. Classroom experience with early childhood students highly preferred. Two years of program management, with supervisory experience strongly preferred.

 

Compensation: $41,000 - $43,000 per year based on experience

Benefits: Medical including dental and vision available, 403b with employer match, FSA, annual Maryland Science Center Membership, free on-site parking

Hours: 35 hours a week, five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. One weekend a week required, with some evening requirements.
