The Bilingual Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides high-quality clinical support to physicians and advanced practice providers while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care. This position serves a diverse patient population and must be fluent in both English and Spanish to effectively communicate with patients, families, providers, and staff. The CMA assists with patient intake, clinical procedures, medication administration, preventive care, patient education, and care coordination while ensuring accurate documentation and regulatory compliance. This position plays a vital role in supporting the mission of Health Care Partners of South Carolina by improving access to high-quality, culturally competent healthcare for the communities we serve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining and documenting medical histories, chief complaints, vital signs, and other clinical information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers with examinations, treatments, procedures, and patient care.
  • Administer medications, immunizations, injections, and treatments within the Certified Medical Assistant scope of practice and as directed by the provider.
  • Perform routine clinical procedures including specimen collection, wound care, dressing changes, electrocardiograms (EKGs), point-of-care testing, and other delegated duties.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing, diagnostic procedures, referrals, and follow-up appointments to support continuity of care.
  • Provide patient education regarding preventive care, medications, chronic disease management, and provider instructions appropriate to the patient's age, health condition, and individual needs.
  • Promote preventive care initiatives and support quality improvement efforts, including HRSA Uniform Data System (UDS) measures and other organizational quality initiatives.
  • Monitor patients for changes in condition and promptly communicate significant findings to the provider or nursing staff.
  • Accurately document patient care, treatments, communications, and clinical activities in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in a timely manner.
  • Maintain examination rooms, clinical equipment, and medical supplies while adhering to infection prevention and control standards.
  • Communicate effectively in both English and Spanish to assist patients throughout the delivery of care, helping ensure they understand provider instructions, medications, treatment plans, and follow-up care. Utilize approved interpretation resources when required by organizational policy.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protect health information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies following established clinical protocols.
  • Collaborate with providers, nursing staff, care teams, and other departments to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Travel between Health Care Partners of South Carolina clinic locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from an accredited certifying organization required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (spoken and written) is required.
  • Portuguese language proficiency is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a physician practice, outpatient clinic, community health center, or similar healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) or community health center preferred.
  • Experience using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, infection prevention practices, and medication administration within the Certified Medical Assistant scope of practice.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and the ability to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of patient information.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish with patients, families, providers, and staff; Portuguese language proficiency is preferred.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills with a commitment to providing compassionate, culturally competent, patient-centered care.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and maintain accurate documentation in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, adapt to changing priorities, respond appropriately in emergency situations, and maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, leadership, and coworkers.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position in a clinical environment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and repetitive hand movements throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds and assist patients as necessary while following established safety guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, and other biohazardous materials while following appropriate infection prevention and safety protocols.
