A Healthcare CFO oversees a healthcare organization's financial health, developing financial strategies, managing budgets and costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and analyzing financial data to improve performance and long-term viability. Key responsibilities include preparing financial reports, managing revenue cycles, leading capital planning, negotiating contracts, and serving as the primary financial spokesperson to executives and the board. A strong candidate typically holds a bachelor's degree in a finance-related field, often with a master's degree or a CPA credential, and possesses experience in healthcare finance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Planning:
Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization's clinical and strategic goals to ensure financial viability.
- Budgeting & Cost Management:
- Oversee the creation and management of operational and capital budgets, identifying opportunities to reduce costs without compromising care quality.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, reports, forecasts, and statistical data to leadership and the board.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to healthcare laws, payer rules, and other regulations, conducting audits and training as needed.
- Revenue Cycle Management:
- Maximize cash flow by overseeing efficient billing, collections, and denial management processes.
- Vendor & Payer Relations:
- Negotiate contracts with vendors, suppliers, insurance companies, and third-party payers.
- Capital & Investment Management:
- Lead capital planning and manage major investments for high-impact projects within the organization.
- Data-Driven Decision Making:
- Leverage financial analytics to improve financial and clinical outcomes.
- Team Leadership:
- Build and lead a high-performing finance team.
- Qualifications
- Education:A bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field is typically required.
- Advanced Degrees/Certifications:
- A master's degree (MBA or master's in healthcare administration/accounting) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is often preferred or beneficial for career advancement.
- Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in healthcare finance, financial management, and strategic planning is essential.
- Key Relationships
- Chief Executive Officer (CEO):Serve as a strategic operating partner to the CEO.
- Board of Directors:
- Present the hospital's financial condition and strategic financial plans to the board.
- Other Executives:
- Collaborate with leaders from other departments, such as supply chain and compliance, to achieve organizational financial solvency.
