Director of Pharmacy/PIC - Critical Access Hospital

Northern Cochise Community Hospital is a 24 bed Critical Access Hospital in Willcox, AZ.  The Pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of the hospital pharmacy and for input and consultation with Rural Health Clinic medications.  This is a one-pharmacist facility and the director functions as a working pharmacist.  

Summary:

Responsible for planning, budgeting, directing and supervising pharmacy activities and personnel including 340B Program management and compliance and antibiotic stewardship programs.  Acts as a resource for all healthcare providers, and monitors efficacy and safety of medication administration.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) or designated administrator. Exercises progressive levels of autonomy in day-to-day activities based on satisfactory job performance.

 Essential Functions: 

Develops departmental goals and objectives and implements policies and procedures.

Establishment and annual review of the Hospital’s pharmacy formulary.

Management and oversight of pharmaceuticals dispensed after hours.

Oversight of Pharmacy emergency plans and required inspections of emergency crash carts.

Dispensing of medications

Management and oversight of perpetual inventory of controlled drugs.

Required participation in any state and federal surveys

Oversight and participation in Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee and attendance at required medical staff meetings

Reviews department performance, effects changes as needed to improve services provided and assures compliance with regulatory requirements on a monthly and annual basis

Responsible for successful and compliant implementation of the 340B program.

Responsible for the facility Antibiotic stewardship program.

Participates in and implements Quality Improvement activities, such as medical error prevention.

Acts as a liaison with Nursing and medical staff for prescriptions, orders, patient reactions, etc.

Manages and oversees department budget.

Establishes and monitors charging system and ensures department functions within budget

Determine fiscal requirements of the department and prepare budgetary recommendations

Prepares, directs, and maintains departmental reports.

Evaluates pharmacy functions, practices and reporting, record keeping, control over drugs, controlled substances, and other substances. 

Develops and maintains department records, reports, and patient records/profiles, and collects statistical data as required.

Coordinates the duties and assigns daily work assignments of all pharmacists and pharmacy staff.

 

Secondary Functions:

Advises patients and family on use of various medications and dosage.

Supervises inventory control to meet patient needs.

Selects vendors and directly inspects pharmaceutical items received.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Management responsibilities may include the following:

Cost and Revenue

  • Engage in business development
  • Manage inventory/supply costs
  • Manage staff costs
  • Prepare budgets/manage variances
  • Review charges and daily billing

Manages department compliance with licensing and certification standards

  • Conduct annual review of policy and procedures
  • Initiate new policies and procedures

Manages quality assurance, performance improvement and patient/staff safety/risk

  • Establish patient and staff safety procedures
  • Establish Quality indicators and analysis data
  • Initiate performance activities

Prepares annual performance and operational goals and targeted activities

  • Monitor progress of goals and activities

Staff Management

  • Conduct employee performance evaluations
  • Conduct staff meetings
  • Conduct training/orientation
  • Establish work schedule
  • Interview and select staff

Education and/or Experience:

Graduate of an accredited pharmaceutical program. 

1-2 years previous hospital experience preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current, unrestricted Pharmacist License from the AZ State Board of Pharmacy.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of hospital-based pharmacy operations.
  • Must be detailed oriented, have tactical planning ability and able to work in a fast paced high volume setting. 
  • Ability to maintain and develop professional growth.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA privacy requirements and medical terminology.
  • Establish and maintain solid working relationships through communication, cooperation, and positive interactions with all patients/clients, employees, staff, providers, and vendors.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule when circumstances necessitate.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong customer service skills along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive communication skills; ability to successfully interact with all customers; continuous demonstration of courteous, cooperative and service orientated behavior.
