Wildlife Education Program Supervisor
Our non-profit organization is seeking a highly focused, self-motivated, organized individual for our Wildlife Education Supervisor position.
We are a non-profit organization based in Farmington, New York (Ontario County) Our mission is to guide brain injury survivors, individuals with disabilities, and their families, by ‘bridging the gap’ between surviving and living lives of independence with dignity and hope.
We provide one of a kind rehabilitative programs for adults rebuilding their lives following a brain injury. One of our programs, The Wildlife Rockstars, is a Wildlife Education outreach group run by our staff and day program members. Members are trained in the care and public presentation of live native and exotic mammals, birds, reptiles and more that we have raised, rescued and care for. The Wildlife Rockstars visit schools, youth/senior groups, nursing homes and community events to share animal facts and encourage environmental and wildlife conservation awareness. Members also share their personal injury and rehabilitation stories and discuss the importance of brain injury safety and prevention practices. While participating in this program, members are working on personal goals such as socialization, organization, communication, memory retention, planning and pre-employment skills. We are a USDA and DEC licensed program.
We are currently seeking a Wildlife Education Program Supervisor who is responsible for developing and implementing a plan of safety, care & enrichment for all program wildlife.
Job Duties Include:
- Hires, trains, coaches and supervises staff hired to work in the Wildlife Education Dept.
- Conducts ongoing and annual performance reviews of Wildlife Education staff.
- Develops daily animal care routine and trains department staff.
- Develops and implements animal health and wellness and enrichment procedures.
- Conducts wildlife care and handling orientation and ongoing training to wildlife education & day program employees, volunteers, interns and program members. Ensures training and orientation is documented & included in consumer, volunteer and/or personnel records.
- Collaborates with Day Program Manager in the coordination, planning, scheduling and implementation of program activities and Wildlife Rockstar presentations.
- Ensures compliance of record maintenance/documentation mandated by USDA, DEC, Dept. of Health Medicaid Waiver Program and organizational policies and procedures.
- Networks, builds relationships and maintains contacts with potential donors, community resources, providers, vendors, potential Wildlife Rockstar customers, media, etc…with purpose of marketing and growing program services.
- Oversees the scheduling of Wildlife Rockstar program community presentations and events & ensures the satisfaction of the customer
- Seeks ways to reduce expenses & secure donations of products (ie. Food & Supplies) from the community
- Develops and implements department safety and oversight procedures. Trains staff in these procedures.
- Maintains positive communication and networking with other wildlife programs.
- Ensures that all program wildlife receive required health exams and certificates and maintains organized record for each wildlife.
- Maintains contact as necessary with consulting veterinarian and zoologist and documents contacts as necessary for wildlife and organization records.
- Maintains a positive, professional demeanor when working with consumers, families, staff, and community resource/service providers
Education: We prefer candidates with education in Wildlife Biology, Zoology, or related field; And/Or being a Licensed Veterinary Technician
Experience: We prefer candidates with a solid 4 years of experience working with wildlife (native and/or exotic), as well as experience teaching in an informal/formal educational setting delivering educational programs to the public. Demonstrates experience in standardized husbandry skills, animal handling, transport, acclimation and care, management of safety protocols, quarantine and clinical treatments, behavioral and environmental enrichment. Supervisory experience also preferred.
